Date:1952 - 1986 (c.)

Description:This children's home was opened in 1952 as a family group, or scattered, home.

When it opened it was a purpose-built detached house on the newly built Garretts Green housing estate. It was in very close proximity to another children’s home, built at the same time, on Clopton Road.

The home was part of a programme of new children’s homes, each built on Birmingham's newly developing housing estates, which were to be small family homes – a move away from the larger children’s homes of the earlier part of the twentieth century. These homes were designed to be a small ‘family’ unit in a house that looked like any other with live-in house-parents. The first of these homes was completed in 1951, and a further 11, one of which was Admington Road, were built in the following decade.

It was built to house eight children. Both boys and girls lived there.

The electoral roll reveals that from 1954 until 1974, Robert and Elsie Smith were registered at the address – they were probably the live-in house parents. After 1975 no further live-in staff were registered to vote at the address.

In July 1986, Admington Road closed as a children’s home.
