Description:From at least 1953, Beechenhurst was used by the Council as a care home for elderly people.

In 1981, Birmingham residential childcare was divided into four districts – West Birmingham, North/East Birmingham, South Birmingham and Central Birmingham. Each had a District Centre which not only took in children for residential care but also dealt with the placements and some of the management functions of all the other children’s homes in the district.

Beechenhurst became the South District Centre in 1986 and could accommodate nine boys and three girls.

With the demise of district centres in the late 1980s, Beechenhurst was no longer used as a children’s home.
