Description:Between 2009 and 2010 a small team, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Birmingham City Council, set about creating a history and archive of Birmingham's many Council-run children's homes between the years of 1949 and 1990.

At that stage, it was not known how many children's homes there were, where they were or who was in them.

Through trawling through Guardians of the Poor, Children's Committee, and Social Services minutes, the Birmingham's Children's Homes Project has put together this exhibition of children's homes in Birmingham. Added to this information, we have some memories from people who used to live or work in the children's homes.

To find a specific home quickly, please put the keyword (generally the name of the road it was on) in the 'quick search' box in the top right of this page.

A couple of words of caution:

A few of the children's homes which were started in the 1950s, 1960s and later are still functioning as children's homes. Because we want to protect the privacy and security of these existing children's homes, we have not been able to include name or location. Instead, they are to be found under the general area in which they are based ie. Yardley children's home.

While the information in this exhibition is correct to the best of our knowledge, mistakes are always possible.
