Description:The success of the <a href="http://www.search.suburbanbirmingham.org.uk/engine/resource/default.asp?resource=1926">co-operative movement</a> owed much to its ability to operate within political and economic niches. This was both facilitated and constrained by legislation which placed obligations on individual societies and their members. These obligations were combined within rule books such as this, with requirements which met the societies’ own ethos.
