Description:Photograph taken by Sir Benjamin Stone (1838-1914).
The invention and development of photography brought many more images into circulation in society. As the British Empire grew there was a desire for knowledge about it and images of children from different parts of the world were collected and displayed. As with Rossetti’s image of the black boy, such images reinforced ideas of difference and in many cases exoticised that difference.
