Description:The 1939 Camps Act established Camp Boarding Schools. Older girls from Birmingham Senior schools were evacuated to Pipewood Camp School in Blithbury near Rugeley which opened in June 1940. The teachers at the school were very concerned to keep parents informed, sending them letters describing life at the schools and playing down any homesickness on the part of the girls. They were also keen that the children were not made unhappy by worrying news from home. Boys from Birmingham Senior Schools were evacuated to Shooting Butts Camp School at Penkridge Bank near Rugeley which opened in July of the same year. Both camp schools closed in 1945.
