Description:The Blue Coat School stood at the east end of St Philip’s churchyard. It was founded as a charity in 1723 to board and educate the children of the poor. Boys and girls were taught to read, write and do basic accounts.

In 1770 two stone statues of pupils in uniform were placed over the front door. Under the girl was carved: ‘We cannot recompense you, but ye shall be recompensed at the Resurrection of the Just.’ Under the boy: ‘Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.’
