Description:Adventure stories, such as Black Ivory became a popular genre for boys in Victorian children’s literature. It was a genre which also reflected the growth of British power with the adventures opening up to young readers the imperial prospect of a wide world to explore and exploit. In contrast, stories for girls were often domestic and celebrated family life or school. This reflected the different expectations for boys and for girls in the Victorian period.
