Description:Vanley Burke’s photographs are noted for making visible in a sensitive way black daily life in Britain. Looking straight at the camera the boy presents the viewer with a strong sense of his own identity. The inclusion of the Union Jack reinforces this impression and seems to say ‘this is my home, this is my flag.’ The image also directly confronts the adoption of the Union Jack by the racist National Front in the 1970s.
