Description:This is a flyer, dating from the 1960's, promoting Indian Independence celebrations organised by the Birmingham branch of the Indian Workers Association at the Midland Institute.

Many cultural performances were organised by the IWA, including those for Jagmohan Joshi Day- a memorial to the late General Secretary- and 'Martyrs Day.' Performances often included patriotic and revolutionary songs, poems, music and plays. Banner Theatre contributed to some of these.

The Independence Day celebrations depicted here consisted of speeches, dancing and singing. The photograph shows people wearing traditional Punjabi dress performing Bhangra.
