Description:As the organisation's work grew it became essential to acquire somewhere to accommodate its activities and provide a focal point within the local community.
The Sparkbrook Association's premises were opened in one of the main lodging house streets at 6 Braithwaite Road in October 1962. It provided a much needed home for the organisation rooted in the heart of the Sparkbrook community.
Local people, members of the social club and students from Birmingham University undertook a great amount of hard work in preparing the property for use; it was converted in their spare time on a purely voluntary basis. Paint was donated by Blundell Spence- a local company- and the furniture was 'begged' from members and friends. Additional contributions were made by foreign students from the Christian Movement for Peace and a Quaker group.
The Sparkbrook Association's headquarters at Braithwaite Road were opened by Humphrey Lyttleton, a well-known British jazz musician and radio personality.
