The Alexandra Theatre remains a well known and popular theatre in Birmingham. Yet not many people are aware that one of its most important early fathers was a member of the Jewish Community. Leon Salberg would become known nationally as the 'pantomine king'. The image above, collected in Harry Levin's 'Newspaper Cutting Collections', shows how popular Salberg was by the time of his death. It also gives information on a diverse life that begin in Warsaw, took part in the Boer War, and later increased Birmingham's reputation for entertainment and the arts.
