Description:Image: from Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
This is one of the few known oil portraits of Joseph Sturge. It is thought to represent the emancipation of apprentices in the West Indies in 1838. Its artist is currently unidentified. Dr Andy Green of Connecting Histories believes it may have been created by the little known 'Alexander Rippingille'. See link below for another painting attributed to this artist. Anyone who can help Dr Green further with this link, please get in touch with Connecting Histories.
