Description:Indian Workers’ Association GB (Birmingham Branch) MS 2141 IWA
The IWA combined Marxist politics with a concern for the plight of Asians and other immigrants in Britain and had a close, if sometimes uneasy relationship with the established trades union movement. Their call for ‘immigrant workers to join with British trades unionists’ in the ‘Grunwick’ dispute reflects both their commitment to the cause and also a continued feeling of ‘otherness’ which remained a feature of the British labour movement for some time afterwards.
