Description:The 1990s were more encouraging for the gay and lesbian community with the repeal of Section 28, the equalisation of age of consent and from 1997 the emergence of Birmingham Pride, although some of the political aspects of Pride have now given way to a more commercial approach. In December 2005, after decades of campaigning, legal recognition for same-sex couples was granted by the introduction of the Civil Partnership Act. The community continues to campaign openly and effectively on a number of issues, including day-to-day harassment and violence on the streets of Birmingham.
