Description:Image of Rev Thomas Swan, minister of the Cannon Street Baptist Church and member of the Birmingham Antislavery society. Birmingham City archives have some records of Swan which include an extract of an antislavery lecture, dated around 1840 (see next image in gallery). It is worth noting that Cannon Street church has a connection with antislavery that goes back to the eighteenth century. One of its first ministers, Samuel Pearce, appears as a local subscriber to Olaudah Equiano's 'Interesting Narrative' in 1790 (see link for more information on this subject).
Today the Cannon Street church is still highly active. It no longer stands in the town centre, but serves the local poplation of Handsworth (see link below to webpage).
