Acocks Green Children's Home

Description:This children’s home, based in Warwick House, was opened as a children’s home by 1979, possibly much earlier.

Having 14 beds, it was a home for children with learning disabilities in 1979. The number of beds was increased in 1980 to 16. In 1996, the home was adapted again to reduce the number of beds, this time to 13. At this time it was still a home for children with learning disabilities.

In the 1970s, Warwick House was one of just three children’s homes which were exclusively for children with disabilities – Jubilee House, Warwick House and Pinewood. In the 1990s, the number had increased to six.

However, we know from people who spent time in Birmingham’s Council-run children’s homes that children with disabilities spent time in other children’s homes as well as those specifically designated as homes for children with disabilities. For example, Flint Green in the 1970s had a high proportion of residents with learning and physical disabilities as did Southview in the late 1950s.
