Description:This image shows girls exercising with Indian clubs. A growing concern for the health and welfare of school children led to physical drill and exercises being introduced into the curriculum. Such activities helped to discipline children. The adoption of the smock dress for girls at the end of the 19th century was in part linked to the demands of rigorous exercise.
