Description:The original St George’s Church was built by Thomas Rickman, around 1821. The Birmingham Diocese was formed in 1905 and the original church was nominated to be a cathedral of Birmingham; however St Phillips Cathedral was chosen instead. It was initially on the opposite side of the current dual carriageway and housed in Great Hampton Row. It remained there for many years and finally was demolished in 1960 due to structural problems which a lot of churches built around that time period.
