Date:1952 - 1979 (c.)
Description:This was opened in 1952 as a type of children's home known as a family group home or scattered home. It was a purpose-built detached house on the new Garretts Green housing estate. It was in very close proximity to another children’s home, built at the same time, on Admington Road. The home was part of a programme of new children’s homes in Birmingham, each built on newly developing housing estates, which were to be small homes - a move away from the large children's homes favoured in the first half of the 20th century. These homes were built on the principle of a small ‘family’ unit in a house that looked much like any other. The first of these homes was completed in 1951, and a further 11, one of which was Clopton Road, were built in the following decade. It was built to house eight children and the houseparents, generally a married couple, lived in the home with, if they had any, their own children. In 1979, the children's home was closed. ---------- Image: Plan of the approximate location of Clopton Road children's home. The home was built directly opposite another children's home, on Admington Road. ---------- Source: This history was compiled by the Birmingham Children's Homes Project, an initiative to explore Birmingham City Council-run children’s homes between 1949 and 1990.
