Description:Work started on building a children’s home in Lea Hall Road in 1973. This was at a time when there was significant building of children’s homes going in – the first six 18-bed homes had recently been completed and work was underway on the next three. Homes in Hockley and Selly Oak were also being built. Lea Hall Road was built as a 17-bed home using the same design as the home in Selly Oak. It opened in around 1975. As with the home in Selly Oak, by 1979, the number of beds in the children’s home had been reduced to 16. Both boys and girls lived there. Lea Hall Road children’s home closed sometime between 1989 and 1994. ---------- Image: The building in 2010, photographed by Gudrun Limbrick with the kind permission of the current owners. ---------- Source: This history was compiled by the Birmingham Children's Homes Project, an initiative to explore Birmingham City Council-run children’s homes between 1949 and 1990.
