Date:1967 - 1981 (c.)
Description:When a site for Yatesbury Avenue was initially selected by the Council in 1967, it was intended to be an ordinary children’s home. It was later decided that it would be a 12 bed home to be used ‘as a reception unit for nursery age children. It will take children who are admitted to care but have no older siblings with them. They will stay in the home for up to three months while suitable placings are arranged – ideally boarding out [fostering]’. The nursery opened in 1968 and was a continuation of the policy to replace the larger nurseries. A second nursery reception unit was opened on Meadow Road, Edgbaston in the following year. In 1981, Yatesbury Avenue Residential Nursery closed when Social Services adopted the new policy of limiting the number of children aged under five coming into residential care. ---------- Image: At this stage, the Birmingham Children's Homes project does not have any photographs of this residential nursery. ---------- Source: This history was compiled by the Birmingham Children's Homes Project, an initiative to explore Birmingham City Council-run children’s homes between 1949 and 1990.
