Description:One of the homes on the Drive at Shenley Fields (a former cottage home) was Pinewood. From 1949 Pinewood had accommodated children with disabilities. When the former cottage homes at Shenley were closing in the mid 1980s, a new children's home for children with disabilities was sought to replace Pinewood. A home in Kings Norton was built to replace it. The new home comprised three separate but linked units providing 16 beds. There was a gap between the closing of Pinewood in 1987 and the opening of the new home in Kings Norton which meant that, for a short time, children from Pinewood stayed in a wing of Prospect Hall which usually only accommodated adults. The Kings Norton Home was opened in around 1988. ---------- Image: A promotional shot used by Birmingham's children's Department in 1967. At this stage, the Birmingham Children's Homes project does not have any photographs of this children's home. ---------- Source: This history was compiled by the Birmingham Children's Homes Project, an initiative to explore Birmingham City Council-run children’s homes between 1949 and 1990.
