Date:1938

Description:By the year 1660 many of the people of England were heartily sick of parliamentary rule and puritanical justice which interfered with their amusements. The flag of the commonwealth is still flying above the town hall but the groups of puritans and Roundheads gathering outside seem anxious and ill at ease.

On May 30th, the eve of Ascension, preparations are being made for the Ascension Fair, the 409th since its institution by the Charter of King Henry III. A party of gypsies are the first to enter the scene with their caravans but are met by the Roundheads who try to stop them.
