Description:Middlemore Homes relied on public donations to fund their work. ‘Before and after’ photographs were used to promote the Homes and raise money by showing the physical and moral improvement of the children. Other children’s charities also used this photographic device. Dr Barnardo was famously accused of dressing the children up in ragged clothes to make maximum public impact. Not every child was photographed in this way.
