Date:1939
Description:Children from St. Clement’s School, Nechells, were evacuated to Church Gresley, near Swadlingcote, Derbyshire on 1 September 1939. After the bombing of Birmingham in summer 1940 a second group of children was evacuated to Abercarn in South Wales on 26th November. They were provided with a list of clothing that they should take with them. However the school records show that many of the children from this very poor part of Birmingham did not posses everything on the list and many were short of clothing, shoes and boots. Maintaining a proper education was very difficult with disruption from air raid alerts, illness and a lack of facilities. Some children were treated very well by their foster carers whilst others were poorly treated and very unhappy. Many of the children were collected by their parents and taken home to Birmingham.
