Description:This striking image of Harriet Tubman leaning on a shot gun presents a very different image of black womanhood involved in antislavery than that which features on the front cover of the 'First Report' of the Women's Society. Not all black female slaves were victims- some like Tubman physically resisted slavery with the same power as men. Over a ten-year period, Tubman apparently made 19 trips into the American South and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom on th underground railroad. She once told Frederick Douglass that in all of her journeys she "never lost a single passenger." Reference Sarah Bradford, "Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman"(1869).
