Description:In the twentieth century, Jews prided themselves on being both 'Jewish' and 'English'. Leaders of the Hebrew Congregation of Birmingham such as Oscar Deutsch also saw the importance of balancing responsibility to others and contributing to local charities alongside an energetic Jewish interest in arts and industry. In many ways, Oscar Deutsch embodied these humantiarian values. He began in industry as a metal worker, gave much time and money to humanitarian causes (as the newpaper report shows) and would go on to open a famous worldwide chain of cinemas that we can still visit today-the “Odeons”. For much more information on Oscar Deutsch, visit the Digital Handsworth website(www.digitalhandsworth.org.uk). There is a picture gallery featuring the development of the Birmingham's 'Odeon' cinemas.
